Apple replaced a failed chip with a failing chip. Not "re-balling", not "reflowing", not "baking". The only real way to fix this problem is to replace the AMD chip alone. The Apple Repair Extension program is not available anymore. Intel graphics and much better thermal management than simply removing all AMD/Ati-related kernel extensions. I'm about 15 minutes into a Handbrake transcode, CPU at 65. Now I could complete the rip, with CPU never rising above 60 and no issues elsewhere. I turned off the discrete GPU and rebooted, AND accepted SMCfancontrol's new minimum of 4000rpm. Other sensors also reported high temps, Northbridge die and one of the GPU heatsinks. HW Sensors showed that when ripping a DVD, the CPU temp rose uncontrollably to the high 70s (Celsius) and either I shut it down or it killed itself. until it's asked to DO something, then it quickly loses its mind. And the Mac will usually run all day like this on the desk. But then, don't do much more by themselves. What I learned from both is that both fans run steady at 2000rpm, hardly a whisper. I'm currently using SMCfancontol and HW Sensors, the latter's History Graphs as a running monitor. I downloaded a few things to play with, HWSensors, SMCfancontrol (don't recall if I got it from there), TG Pro Someone mentioned CPU temp, and there was a recent thread of someone else's about it. I'd propped up the back a little in hopes of better heat dissipation.
